Correction - Georgiana Bishop

I apologize for having such an active and curious mind. There is a part of me that just had to see the story about Georgiana Bishop (previous post regarding the naked woman the artillery soldiers found near Fort Wayne in 1861). So I went to the Detroit Public Library on Woodward, across from the DIA, to see the article for myself. It turns out the story is either a hoax, there was biased reporting in the newspaper then (we still see this today with FOX news), there was more than one daily edition of the newspaper, or the author of the story had other sources, perhaps a military log or something, and didn't cite the source correctly.

So this is what I found from the "Detroit Advertiser":

Thursday, May 30, 1861:

"AN INSANE WOMAN. - An insane who gave her name as Georgiana Bishop, and a resident of Cincinnati, waspicked up by some of the soldiers of the Fort on Monday night, and placed in a house near by [sic.]. She was almost dead from exposure, and it was very doubtful whether she will recover. She is being attended by the surgeon of the Second Regiment."

Friday, May 31, 1861:

"A MYSTERY SOLVED. - A quantity of female clothing was found hanging in a tree near Fort Wayne on Wednesday, and brought to the office of Justice Kuhn. All manner of horrid things were thought of, and a denouncement of no ordinary nature was expected to result therefrom. Yesterday, however, it was discovered to be the wearing apparel of the unfortunate woman who was on the day before found in a complete state of nudity wandering about the woods, by a soldier, and taken to a house near by [sic.]. In a freak which can only be accounted for on the plea of insanity, she disrobed herself, and would have soon died had she not been discovered."

Saturday, June 1, 1861:

[A fairly long article about the Coldwater Artillery (a.k.a., 1st Michigan Light Artillery, Coldwater Artillery, Loomis Battery, etc.), that ended with the following paragraph:

"During the afternoon yesterday, a bible was presented to each member of the company by Mr. Alanson Sheley, in behalf of the Rev. Doctor Duffield. The present was very thankfully reveived, and will, without doubt, exert a very salutary influence upon the men amid the temptations of camp life."

During this week, there were several articles of the Coldwater artillery and life at the Fort. There was an article complaining that soldiers were swearing too much when ladies were near, and also of some drinking. One 6'1" recruit was originally denied membership in the Coldwater Artillery, because he admitted to drinking, occasionally to the point of intoxication. But, he protested, "I buy it myself." Then he expressed desire to seek revenge for the killing of a certain union officer, and he was granted conditional acceptance if he proved himself to be a good horseman.

Sorry for the rambling, but I just had to see the original article for myself.
